Thank you so much for writing this Katy. In all the discussions about behavior in schools these days, this is such an important part of the conversation that is ignored.

I agree with so much of this article. School systems need to change. Children need to be given true autonomy. And yet, your claim seems to say that PDA is a result of our eduction system. I am curious what you would say about children who as young as 3 are demand avoidant. They haven’t been exposed to school and demands there. You mention “children whose autonomy needs are particularly strong”… I am curious what you would say about biology and neurotypes. Would you agree that some people are wired to be more sensitive to loss of autonomy? I think your article would be more powerful if instead of implying causation you identified the education system as exacerbating PDA.
